Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the ability to challenge certain rulings from the official, mirroring the practice currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step arrives only a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
